    [Netzwerk] managed wifi

I'm looking for a managed wifi solution for a large house. I can't use autonomous AP's because it probably will be a wireless chaos.
So I think it's better to use a proffesional solution. One where all AP's work together and form one WiFi network with semaless handover, auto RF recovery, etc.

I am thinking of Ruckus, or Netgear, or maybe HP. Any experience somebody ?

You could user radius for authentication.
In this case you only have to use APs which support radius.

    Just google for "radius server"

this only simplifies authentication. But the real problem is RF management, and having one wifinetwork instead of several stand-alone AP's

Lancom has also a good reputation for wireless networks.

For private use I only have experience with the Apple Airport access points. I have two Airport Extreme and one Airport Express at home forming a single wireless LAN. If you have an Apple environment this is really a good solution. In any case you will have to make an RF survey to determine which WLAN channels are suitable - my neighbors for example are all running their Fritzboxes on channel 1

          Hi,
Habe a look at astaro (now Sophos) secure gateway (now umt). They offer WiFi aps which van be managed by the ventral firewall.
There is a Free Home license and VMware image / iso of the firewall availible

          Kind regards

My favorite would be LANCOM too...as long as price is not an issue

However, have you planned the WLAN and know that such managed solution is necessary ?
            • Is this a single fsamily house, thus one single network. Or a shared house with several parties (separated WLANs) ?
            • Which WLAN standards need to be provided. Especially 2.4GHz needs planning if multiple AP are required. Here managed solutions may help in case of a large number of APs.
In our house I do have 4APs which have manually assigned channels and all the same SSID & keys.

            Cheers,
            Gaston

                Hi,
I'm using UBNT UniFi AP for 6 months and still excited.

                Unifi | Ubiquiti Networks, Inc.

                Main benefits for me:

                -seamless handover
                -good coverage
                -nice looking
                -PoE
                -scalability
-Controller software only needed duriung installation
                -CHEAP 70€ including German TAX

                Cheers

                  Indeed, sounds interesting, but...

-Controller software only needed duriung installation
Only needed, or only used during installation ? The latter would not be an advantage . Good Controlling software should be able to dynamically assign channels to the APs during runtime.

Yes, but this is the 2.4GHz only. The 5GHz Version is more around 200€.

If you want an Enterprise Solution, you have to buy Enterprise Products.

Trying to Build an Enterprise Solution with Home Hardware linke Linksys or so you will fail...

                      Hi there,

you should definitely have a look at aerohive.

very nice AP's, easy config interface, enterprise-config-options.

I have a "small" installation in our house with 6 APs and 3 SSIDs.

                      Guest-SSID with Internet-Only and 1 day-PSK.
                      Private SSID with PPSK
Device SSID for Cameras and other stuff.

Hey, the UniFi AP seems to be the product i was searching for! Nice look (accepted by wife) and wall-mountable. Unfortunately i forgot to add a power supply near the ethernet plug at our main floor (wall, 2.4m height) so i'm forced to use PoE which terminated the Airport Express idea. I run several Apple products and they work fine, especially using AirPlay, but i didn't find any solution for the power supply.

My question is about the PoE adapter which seems to be included. Works this adapter as an injector and therefor i do not have to add any other devices? My switch doesn't support PoE, but maybe there will be some PoE cams added to the network in short time and due to these plans i should invest in a real PoE switch...?!

                          Yes, an injector is included.
                          No, PoE Switch is necessary.

Any known issues working in a FritzBox (3x AP & DECT) / Apple (2x AirPlay) WLAN? Should all work with the same SSID...

For only using the AP no PoE switch is needed, only in case of adding more PoE consumers, isn't it? Being confused...
