thnx guys. I'm having a serious look @ Ubiquiti dualband pro AP's with manager s/w installed on a server (that will be installed anyway for AXIS cams)
The Ruckus solution may be even better, but the costs are also a factor ofcourse.

I ordered a sample AP to test with.

I will share my experience later.

      Hi all,

i just finished the installation of my Ubiquiti AP and i´m quite impressed!!
Order in Poland, everything was fine. The AP looks good but is a little bit bigger than expected (read the product description!) but nevertheless it received a OK from my wife as the complete white body with the discreet green LED ring is looking worthy on the wall. By the way, now i´m able to tell my guest they have to look for the green ring to get to the guest toilet!
The installation of the admin software was a bit tricky as it tooks me several attemps to get the stuff running on a 64bit Win7 and on my Mac several ports were already in use, but finally it works.
The software looks very impressive and the wireless reception is very good. At the moment i´m quite fine with my AP, in case there are any problems or comments i´ll let you know...

Is that Software included when i buy one AP or did i have to buy it separatly?

Can you post a real Picture of this AP?

s/w can be downloaded for free. Windows PC that runs the s/w should be on 24/7.
          pictures @ Google ;-)

Software is included, and can also be fount there:

            Unifi | Ubiquiti Networks, Inc.

@Hannatz: Pretty much the same experience for me, too

              That's not 100% correct.
Software is only needed for Setup and if you're hosting a captive portal for a public hotspot.

Yeah, was looking for server software to run on the Wiregate (Debian). Asking my guests to buy vouchers is a new business case!!
Software is only needed at setup, afterwards not really used in a private home.
                My quick & dirty installation:

Driven by this thread I decided to change my wifi infrastructure lately to Unifi as well. I used to have 3 distinct AP from different brands manually configured into the same SSID on non-overlapping channels.

As one of these intermittently caused trouble I decided to swapit and was tumbeling between changing it by an expansive model or swap the whole for a Unifi.

So I decided for the latter and bought 3 Unifi AP + 1 AP Pro. I refrained from using the long-range versions as the 2.4GHz band has a 12cm wavelength which could interfere with the steel bar distance in the reinforced concrete risking to make no big difference in range in the house between floors.

While not required the software is running 24/24 on a Linux server for monitoring and alarming purposes.

While only using it for a few days now I am very happy whith the system as well for the ease of use as for the performance.

Just wanted to share my experience.

                    Cheers,
                    Gaston

                      After 6 months I'm still exited,too.
                      Roaming AP's never been cheaper
Compared to our 11n Cisco AP's at work, UniFi's speed and coverage is amazing.

I glued spacers to the mounting bracket to hide my RJ45 wall outlet.

this only simplifies authentication. But the real problem is RF management, and having one wifinetwork instead of several stand-alone AP's
look like vWLAN from Blue Socket.

                        Regards Tbi

After having played with it for a few days, IMHO Unifi is unbeatable regarding featues/price. The drawback is that some features need a computer running 24/24.

I have now setup a guest network using the build in portal with vouchers similar to a hotel internet access. Customizing the voucher with additional information was also very easy. Management of that feature is alo as easy as 1-2-3 and allows for single-use or multi-access vouchers. Even paypal payment or custom portal is possible while I did not try these one.

And Beta is announced for V3.0 for end of year

last week I discovered that neighbours 2 floors up are using my guest SSID that I switched on for experimental use. It's that good :-)

                              Another quick experience update:

Don't expect any cleverness from the Unifi AP in regard of automatic channel selection. Currently it will not switch th echannel at runtime nor cleverly select during boot.

The auto selection is only based on channels 1,6 & 11 beacuse they are the first group of 3 channels which do not overlapp. So if you only have 3 APs the auto channel is working fine, but not because it is clever, but because the wifi specs.

In my case I do have 4 Aps and found out that the 2 APs which were nearest each to the other did have the same channel.

This again was probably due to the fact that my Aps are deistributed over 3 floors and I used a separate map for each. For the controller this is like3 different buildings. So in case you want to use automatic channel selection it is best to use one map per building.

When I did so it did put the 2 APs farest away from each other on channel 6, giving the other 2 channels 1 & 11.

This beacause it only uses these 3 channels. So I did manually configure the channels using 1 & 3 for the 2 stations farest away from each other as they overlap and 8 & 13 for the other 2.

Th eadvantage of this configuration is that it only overlaps by about 50% while the automatic selection overlaps by 100% in frequency.

I do not want to say that the system is bad, but jsut wanted to point out that it is not necesserely plug&play as one may expect. However, according to Ubiquiti, better algorithms are planned for the future.

                              Cheers,
                              Gaston

                                Ubiquiti is also still stable?
