yes I used the smartControl from the image and altered the scripts to adopt them to my configuration.

Just to be sure - the GIT server is running on your Linux? You are not using public github server?

I can see that the smartcontrol is in /var/control in the Pi image.... then it must be something to setup the webserver to also check that location - or move it to /www/html folder...

Yes, there is a Git server running on the VM. You might use GitHub as well (depending on the required privacy demand you have :-).
In the Image you have two instances of an lighttpd running. I use apache2 on the VM with two virtual servers configured. One for smartControl, one for smartvisu with the appropriate locations.
