    Top hat rail as PE

    Hello,

In the "Show your distribution" thread there are a lot of examples where either Phoenix, Weidmuller or Wago multi level terminal blocks with PE connection to DIN rail are used to provide PE for outgoing circuits. It is logical that DIN rail should be isolated from the enclosure (in case of class 2) and have additional marking, but are there any additional requirements in VDE to use the DIN rail for PE distribution.

Is a regular galvanized steel rail acceptable for this application, or is a copper or aluminum rail needed for this?

My eli said it does not matter, in fact he did not even think it had to be isolated, so that made me a bit cautious. I am not from Germany, but our local code is decades behind VDE or BS regarding safety, so I would rather be safe than sorry.

Galvanized steel rail ist OK and is what you find in the configurators from Hager, Striebel&John, Wago, Phoenix.
