    Recommendation for HomeTheater

    Hi,

I'm about to setup a HomeTheater.
As I want everything to be controlled by my HomeServer, I'm looking for devices having an IP I/F and able to be remotely controlled via IP.

For the amplifier, the Denon AVR 3808 has been mentionned many times. I think there is a newer model but forgot the reference. There is also a Yamaha device.

Any recommendation or hands-on experience with such devices as a BluRay reader and a projector (5m from screen) ?

    Thank you for your comments.

    My choice:

    Serial control via Moxa:

Linn - Music Systems - Unidisk SC

I have the old Classik Movie

I also have some Denon on my shopping list.. But without having one myself, yet known from several threads: The telnet-interface is hard to use directly, it stops sending updates after the first one on persistent connections. Together with the 10s timeout of the HS: problem. So until I got one myself and wrote some script to workaround a Moxa is probably best
My projector has RS232 but isn't available anymore so no recommendation. Another thing with the dreambox, this is still my #1 for a STB..

..Homecinema is overdue for 2y now as it's still packed in boxes (and therefore totally outdated meanwhile), another year might pass..

        Hi!

I have the Denon AVR-4308 in use for about 4 weeks now and control it from my HS Visu:
        - I send the requests directly via IP-Telegrams - works fine and was easy to set up as the documentation by denon is ok and the structure of the text which has to be sent is easy
        - Concerning the reponse from the AVR I go along with Makki: It does not work directly via telnet due to the restriction Makki mentioned! But as I do not want to have an additional Moxa just for the responses I start the web request after sending an IP-Telegram successfully and so I get the correct status. Additionally I run web requests cyclic to catch changes which where executed directly at the receiver or with the remote.

Maybe running cyclic requests is not the smartest solution but it works and I can live with the situation that the Denon and the Visu are out of sync for a few minutes after changing something at the receiver directly!

        Regards

        Olaf

I guess the 4308 is the latest model in the range, so I was hoping for some change at that level. Too bad. We can neither blame Denon nor the HS.

I wouldn't know which alternative to select: a bad or a very bad

Do you have other devices controlled via the HS (Blu-Ray, projector) ?
I'm reading the specs of the Blu-Ray LG BD-370 and Sony BDP-S570, they do have a RJ45, but it's hard to know what can be done with it (mostly FirmWare update)

Thank you for the feed-back, appreciated

            Hi!

The 4308 is not the latest model, 4-6 weeks ago they published the 4310 and 4810 - that is the only reason why I have the 4308 - it was on sale due to the new models

Yes and no - yes, I do control a Russound CAV6.6 and a CAS4.4 and a mac mini with mmh (still working on it in demo mode before ordering the license from Mike), no, no projector or tv.

            Regards

              Hi Warichet!

Thank you for the good news.
So, I better chose a 4 port Moxa, although I'm somewhat reluctant to the RS232 solution.
I'm still searching for an IP based solution, but it's very hard to get this kind of detail from the specs. That's why this forum is of such high value.
I wonder what can be done with the LG BD-370/BD-390, waiting for some reply from support.... if ever.

                  My projector has RS232
This one has an RJ45, but again, the problem is to get the detailled spec about what can be done with it.

Also, I found a Blu-Ray reader (LG BD-370), with RJ45 . Called TechSup (with a little help from my friends ) about the specs: "Nothing but FirmWare upgrade". Rhâ !

If still interested, I can eventually let you know about my findings (not willing to cripple the forum with OT data).

I think the topic "controllable" AV-equipment is always interesting, so if you find some devices which fit well, it's IMHO worth reporting..
