EDOMI-LTS - future development

As my german writing is not so good I hope you don’t mind I’ll continue in english.

I’ve been living in Berlin Germany from 2017-2020 but had moved back to India due to COVID :-(

As I’ve living in Germany I’ve decided to learn German whenever I could - so I’ve found the KNX user community and by chance EDOMI.

Luckily my flat was equipped & controlled by KNX and I’ve so I’ve tried EDOMI as my logic engine (I’ve never spend as much time to a visual control interface). As such it combined my addiction to smart home to the need of read & learn German… even Google translate is still a major need).

Finding that recent message that Gaert seems to not maintain this community anymore - I’ve decided to help keeping this great software alive.

According to my understanding

• the code is available but somehow not maintained anymore
• I’ve found documentation it’s been GPL (documented until EDOMI V1.48) - which means strict copyleft - updates must stay open source - so I decided to continue with GPL 3.0
• CentOS is end of life - some changes are required for RockyLinux or similar
• Used PHP is getting older and might need maintenance
• …

So I’ve uploaded the code to GitHub to address those - building an EDOMI-“LTS” (long term support) with the help of other enthusiasts: https://github.com/SmarthomeIndia/EDOMI-LTS

Building a version and user guide to install it on Rocky linux should be possible without too much hassle. I´ve see the docker images from Starwars-fan did already achieved some fixes which can be probably re-used.

I’m thinking about adding multi language to add an English translation… but it seems this isn’t as easy as I’ve not found an easy way - nevertheless english might attract more people around the world…

For future extensions it might be good to enhance the MQTT integration - which sounds for me a good “bridge” towards zigbee/z-wave/matter … (for now I’m using the LBS from Jonofe - which works great) … but wouldn’t it be nice to directly use an MQTT within the logic (without mapping them to internal objects)?

I’m clearly would need help from the community (I’m not a great developer)

I don't know to what extent you intervene and change the source code? Gaert has explicitly prohibited making and publishing changes to the source code.

As previously mentioned, I am committed to maintaining the code and ensuring its compatibility with Rocky Linux and future PHP versions. Additionally, I aim to address any known or future issues and incompatibilities. My dream is to include English as a supported language, which could potentially expand our user base, especially here in India.

I understand that Gaert is resistant to changes. However, after reading the “quo vadis” thread, it appears that the software is no longer actively maintained. It’s important to note that since it was originally released under the GPL license, it will continue to remain GPL-compliant.

Although there haven’t been many replies in the thread, I’ve received several inquiries via email. The GitHub files are based on the last available code version (2.03). I’ve taken the liberty of cleaning up and formatting some lines, removing references to the edomi.de server/website (which appears to be offline), and eliminating any client IDs associated with that page.

Moving forward, my next steps involve implementing the necessary changes to support Rocky Linux and MariaDB. I’ll be working on this soon - any help would be appreciated.

thx for taking the initiative and move forward with the future of Edomi. I'm with you regarding required changes, you will receive a ton of PRs soon. Stay tuned!

But we should clearly think about on how to go ahead, especially with what to change and which changes are really required, at least for the time being. I've already ported Edomi to RockyLinux 8 without changing the Edomi code. That's how the Docker image and the LXC template works. But for RockyLinux 9, the whole thing needs to be updated to PHP 8, which is a huge refactoring...

Thank you! I noticed you’ve put in a lot of effort to fix the formatting—great job. I started this earlier, so I understand it’s a lot of work. It’s a great step!

Regarding your comment on changes and considering which ones are required, I fully agree. Let’s do what’s necessary for now to keep EDOMI alive: RockyLinux 7 as the first step. Rocky 8 and PHP 8 are different topics that will require a lot of revisiting and refactoring of the code. Does this look good to you?

Hi at all,

I've already startet with refactoring of the installer script. The idea is to install right from Github by keeping as much as possible as it is right now. That would lead to easy installation without preparing a release archive for the time being and also enable further contribution by interested users and developers.

Also I've prepared issue templates to keep track what's going on, see here.

Afaik, the author(s) (copyright owner) can freely choose to change the license. If so, it would be ok to fork from the latest GPL-version, but not from a version with a different license. I'm no lawyer... just hoping you did your research properly.

as far as I understand the GPL:

If you are the copyright owner then you always have complete freedom at any time to change the license to anything you want. (This only affects people who download the project after the change, those who downloaded it before can continue to use it under the old license.) If other people have contributed code and there are multiple owners then you need to get everyone's approval to change the license.

That would mean, to be compliant you can only start an EDOMI-LTS initiative based on the last version, which was published under GPL, which probably was v1.48.

Based on this completely unclear legal situation, I decided to migrate my entire environment to Home Assistant. And as long as there is no clear license situation, I will not make my LBS publically available anymore. I would really recommend, before you continuie, to clarify it with some klind of legal support.

Dear all,

I understand that there have been some concerns regarding the code. I, too, had some reservations initially. However, I consulted a friend who works in the legal department of our company. According to his assessment, there are no issues with using and maintaining the code, as long as it remains non-commercial. Based on this advice, I made the decision to proceed.

I appreciate the motivation shown by those contributing enhancements and keeping the code maintained. On a slightly somber note, I’ve noticed that Jonofe doesn’t seem pleased with this decision (especially since I’m currently using his MQTT building blocks/modules as bridge to zigbee2mqtt).

also das ist echt zum davon laufen! Der Entscheid von jonofe, sämtliche LBS vom Download-Portal zu nehmen, kommt dem Todesstoss gleich denn damit macht jegliche Arbeit am Projekt keinen Sinn mehr. Schon unglaublich, wie sich ein solches Ökosystem zum sterben bringen lässt...

Oder wie soll man den Hinweis auf HASS verstehen?
