    Hard to believe

    Hello,

So, I called an expert to help me analyze the Wireshark trace.
The positive thing is that the problem is quite consistent, reproducable at will.

Upon close attention and many cross-checks, it appears that the dialog between the HS and the FTP server is not correct
when the session is initiated by the HS (missing ACK from the HS to the FTP server)
Although a dialogue initiated manually is correct.

The conclusion is that there might be a problem in the implementation of the TCP stack on the HomeServer.
Please don't flame me right now.
Yes, I know, it's hard to believe.
Yes, I know, there are hundreds, maybe thousands of HomeServer in the field whereof many are still running 2.8.
Why me ? What's so special about me ?

I didn't publish the troubleshooting session (in french) nor the Wireshark traces, but they are available upon request.

So, I'm having a problem with FTP, the writing of Remanentspeicher and some Webabfrage, well I think they all stemm
from the same cause, they poison me since months.

    Webabfrage on mobotix T24

Some weeks ago, I noticed a problem with the Moxa NPort 5110, it looks like the Webabfrage is NOT executed at all, again
    hard to believe, but ...
I called Moxas Germany excellent Support who took over my installation, the conclusion was: the NPort is OK, it's not
a Moxa problem, but rather software....
This problem is still pending as of today, no solution is available. In the mean time, the NPort has been replaced, no change.

I certainly do not want to start a polemic, my question is: How do I get out of this mess ?
The only way out I can see is to upgrade from 2.8 to 4.1 but then I bump into an unanswered question mentionned here

Anyone running 4.1 and the xxAPI ?
    and here

Several parts of my Visu are based on the xxAPI and I would hate to loose them.
So, I ask again: Am I the only alien running the xxAPI ? and willing to move to 4.1 ?

Thank you to all who kindly helped me.

I don't believe that changing to 4.1. will solve the problem. I run Moxas and FTP since 2.4 (or even earlier).

I have several HS at my friends and familiy, they do run moxas and Webabfrage and so on since many years. It works. Never any problem.

If yours does not work, I would change the HS. Hard to believe, but could it be a problem with the network adapter?

I have a spare HS4. Do you want to try this machine?

Yes and no. Knowing that an upgrade will replace the "firmware" which is in fact the OS (containing the IP stack), it is possible.
Which is less possible is that I'm the only one bumping into this problem.
Also, there might be a hidden problem, which nobody sees except on rare circumstances due to i.e. my network config. But again, the config hasn't changed since months.

Fully agree. It was all running for me as well, since many years.

At least, that would make a clear cut between hardware and software.

As you say: hard to believe. Knowing that all other functions are running fine, only ftp, and only when iniated from the FS, just missing an ACK ?!?

Thank you for the generous offer, much appreciated. If all my ressources are exhausted, I might come back to you.
If I get a feedback about the compatibility of the xxAPI and ver 4.1, I'll do the upgrade. I have to do it anyway.
After that, I'll have concrete arguments to make a decision.

        Thanks again.

          Ok, don't hesitate to ask

Upgrading to 4.1 is no one way road. You can go back to 2.8 in any case. So you will only need some time to find out whether 4.1 would solve your problem or not.

            One more test.
I wanted to eliminate any suspicion about the Catalyst 3750X-48P-S, so I installed another small & dumb switch (Linksys 8P) with only the NAS, the HS and the uplink.
            Same problem.

So, I've "pimped" my HomeServer again. I replaced:
              - 2 x memory (SDRAM is getting rare and very expensive)
              - Flash disk
              Test Ftp: no change.

              I ugraded from Experte 2.8 to 4.1.
Still no Ftp nor Webabfrage from the Moxa, crazy stuff.

I wonder: how many HomeServers are out in the field ? somebody knows ? (maybe several thousands)
From all those, I'm the only one having this problem ?
No, it's not hard to believe, I just can't believe it.
If I trust the Wireshark trace I took and the analyze of a network specialist, it looks like there is a problem around the HomeServer2. It could be that I'm making the same mistake since the beginning, just don't know what.

              So far:
I've tried several Ftp combinations (although this is irrelevant to the Webabfrage problem)
I've swapped the NAS (Ftp server), replaced by a W2K server
I've swapped the Catalyst (switch), replaced by a dumb Linksys.
I think my config can not be suspected, what else ?

Did I fail to see something ?
Is there any log file (besides Debug) which could help me ?

              Thanks for any hint

                Several thousands of HS, indeed.

I checked the internal bug report system, there is no issue. We hadn't this problem here, so you seem to be the only one, even it is very hard to believe.

Maybe you can send me your project and I will put it one one of my HS machines and try to find out...

OK, I was waiting for this kind of information, hoping for a known issue. Too bad

I guess this test will make a final point to my saga, unless it works for you and not for me .... but let's see.

I started to configure the HS3 to save its retentive memory to a NAS but did not finish it.
